6-1 The Fallen Ones

Torah Portion 6-1 Bereshith (Genesis) 6:1-7:24

There were fallen ones in the earth in those days; and also, after that, when the Sons of Elohiym came in unto the daughters of men, and they bore children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.

BERESHITH (GENESIS) 6:4

The Flood event is an extremely important message given to mankind. Many people believe that fallen angelic beings mated with the daughters of men. They believe the offspring from this union were “giants” who were very violent and destructive. The “giants” did not have the capacity to do good. In the minds of these people, the earth was destroyed because of these “giants”. Our Father had to purge the earth of these awful, violent men.

The text in Bereshith (Genesis) 6 tells us that the “nephilim” existed after the Flood event as well. People who believe this narrative point to the passages that refer to Goliath and his brothers or the sons of Anak. They teach people that these are the offspring of angelic beings and the daughters of men. The Law and Prophets do not discuss the creation of this class of angelic beings. In fact, the Hebrew word often translated as “angel” is “Malak” and it simply means “messenger”. In the following passage, the two “messengers” or “angels” that came to Sodom are called “men”:

Behold now, I have two daughters which have not known man; let me, I pray you, bring them out unto you, and do ye to them as is good in your eyes: only unto these men [H376] do nothing; for therefore came they under the shadow of my roof.

Bereshith/Genesis 19:8

The Hebrew word translated as “men” in this passage is the same Hebrew word used in the following two passages:

And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of man [H376].

Bereshith/Genesis 2:23

These are the generations of Noach: Noach was a just man [H376] and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with Elohiym.

Bereshith/Genesis 6:9

In the context of this passage, the two messengers sent to Sodom and Gomorrah were literally “men” like Noach and Adam. They were not a separate class of “angelic beings”. When the context of the Word is maintained, we see a different message revealed that is extremely relevant to us in this day and age.

The Hebrew word “nephilim” actually means “fallen ones”. It is often translated as “giants” but can we really draw a conclusion that all “giants” are “fallen ones”? Here are some pictures of “giants” from the late 1800’s to 1900’s.

Do these men appear to be brutes bent on destroying the inhabitants of the earth? They appear to be just large men. Some “giants” may be good and some may be evil just like little men. Some “giants” may be “fallen ones” and some little men may be “fallen ones”. But we cannot conclude that ALL “giants” are “fallen ones”. Therefore, “giants” is a mistranslation of “nephilim” in Bereshith 6:4. The term “fallen ones” is a more appropriate translation. For example, the underlying word translated as “fall” in this passage is “nephilim” exactly the way it appears in Bereshith 6:4.

Yahuah upholds all that fall [Nephilim #H5307], and raises up all those that be bowed down.

סומך  יהוה  לכל  הנפלים  וזוקף  לכל  הכפופים׃

Tehillim/Psalms 145:14

Is this passage talking about “giants”? This passage could read, “Yahuah upholds all the fallen ones and raises up all those that be bowed down”. In this situation, these people belong to Yahuah and have “fallen down”. They are “fallen ones”. Our Father upholds them and raises up all those that be bowed down or humble. “Nephilim” cannot be translated as “giant” in this passage because it does not fit the context of the passage itself. It doesn’t sound right that “Yahuah would uphold the giants” after destroying the earth because of the giants. Here is another example:

And so it was, that all that fell [Nephilim #H5307], that day, both of men and women, were twelve thousand, even all the men of Ai.

ויהי כל־הנפלים ביום ההוא מאישׁ ועד־אשׁה שׁנים עשׂר אלף כל אנשׁי העי׃

Yahusha/Joshua 8:25

This passage also has the term “nephilim” exactly the way it appears in Bereshith 6:4. This passage could be translated as, “And so it was, that all the fallen ones that day, both of men and women, were twelve thousand, even all the men of Ai”. In this passage, “fallen ones” is a reference to men and women who died that day and not “giants”. If we substituted the Hebrew word for “giants” in this passage, it would not fit the context of the passage as well. There is a total of 17 occurrences of “nephilim” in the Hebrew writings and the context of each supports the conclusion that “nephilim” means “fallen ones” and not “giants”. We illustrate all 17 occurrences in our study Nephilim” in the Hebrew Writings. Here is a more accurate translation of Bereshith 6:4.

There were fallen ones in the earth in those days; and also, after that, when the Sons of Elohiym came in unto the daughters of men, and they bore children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.

Bereshith/Genesis 6:4

Ancient Hebrew is a very concrete language. As we can see in Tehillah 145:14, the people in this passage have literally “fallen down”. In Yahusha 8:25, the people literally had “fallen down” and died. What does it look like from the perspective of our Father to see someone who has literally “fallen down”? “Falling down” is the movement of one from a higher elevation to a lower elevation. Testimony says that the House of our Father is located on a mountain and His House is surrounded by the Garden of Eden. It is something elevated. Here are two witnesses: Yeshayahu and Yechezqel.

They shall not hurt nor destroy in all My Set-apart Mountain: for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of Yahuah, as the waters cover the sea.

Yeshayahu/Isaiah 11:9

You are the anointed Kerub that covers; and I have set you so: you were upon the Set-apart Mountain of Elohiym; you have walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire. You were perfect in your ways from the day that you were created, till iniquity was found in you. By the multitude of thy merchandise, they have filled the midst of you with violence, and you have sinned: therefore, I will cast you as profane out of the Mountain of Elohiym: and I will destroy you, O covering Kerub, from the midst of the stones of fire.

Yechezqel/Ezekiel 28:14-16

The anointed Kerub was on top of the Mountain of Yahuah Elohiym which is in the Garden of Eden and he was cast-out of the Mountain of Elohiym. He is literally a “fallen one”. This passage is telling us that he fell because he sinned against Yahuah Elohiym. He transgressed the Laws of our Father. This is the definition of a “fallen one” from the perspective of Yahuah. Someone who has sinned. Adam and Chavah were cast-out of the Garden of Eden where Yahuah dwells. They were on our Father’s mountain just like the anointed Kerub in the previous passage:

So, he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the Garden of Eden Kerubiym, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to guard the Way to the Tree of Life.

Bereshith/Genesis 3:24

If the Garden of Eden is the mountain where Yahuah dwells, then Adam and Chavah would be “fallen ones” in a literal sense because they went from a higher elevation to a lower elevation. This occurred because they sinned. They were in the Garden of Eden and then descended into the Land of Eden.

Qayin (Cain) killed his brother Abel and was cast-out of our Father’s Presence in Eden. He descended into Nod which is a place in lower elevation than Eden. When mankind sinned as a whole, they could not go any lower than where they were in the land. So, our Father cast them into the sea in the Great Flood. ALL of these are examples of “fallen ones” and ALL were removed from a higher elevation to a lower elevation because of sin. The House of Yashar’El also existed in the Presence of Yahuah.

For through the anger of Yahuah it came to pass in Yerushalayim and Yahudah, until he had cast them out from his presence, that Zedekiah rebelled against the king of Babylon.

2 Malakiym/Kings 24:20

Qayin was also cast-out from the Presence of Yahuah.

And Qayin went out from the Presence of Yahuah, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden.

Bereshith/Genesis 4:16

The Land of Eden exists in the Presence of Yahuah and the Land of Yashar’El exists in the Presence of Yahuah. They are the same location with different names. The House of Yashar’El occupied the Land of Yashar’El or the Land of Eden just like Adam and Chavah in the very beginning. The House of Yashar’El was cast-out of the Land of Eden just like Qayin (Cain) in the very beginning.

The House of Yashar’El “fell” from a higher elevation to a lower elevation. They are literally “fallen ones”. They have become like the people who live among the nations.

Testimony also tells us that the House of Yashar’El are called the “sons of Elohiym”.

And you shall say unto Pharaoh, Thus says Yahuah, Yashar’El is my son, even my firstborn:

Shemoth/Exodus 4:22

Beloved, now are we the sons of Elohiym, and it does not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.

1 Yochanan/John 3:2

For as many as are led by the Spirit of Elohiym, they are the sons of Elohiym.

Romans 8:14

In Bereshith 6:4, it says the “sons of Elohiym” took wives from the daughters of men. The context of the passage itself tells us that their offspring are “men”.

There were fallen ones in the earth in those days; and also, after that, when the Sons of Elohiym came in unto the daughters of men, and they bore children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men [H376] of renown.

Bereshith/Genesis 6:4

This is the same Hebrew word used to describe the messengers that came to Sodom and it is the same Hebrew word used to describe Noach and Adam. In fact, the eyewitness accounts tell us that Adam was a “Son of Elohiym”.

Which was the son of Enosh, which was the son of Seth, which was the son of Adam, which was the son of Elohiym.

Luke 3:38

Adam live in the Land of Eden which is the same place the House of Yashar’El lived. Adam is called a “Son of Elohiym”. The House of Yashar’El are called the “Sons of Elohiym”. People who repent from their sins and follow Messiah Yahusha are called the “Sons of Elohiym”. Noach “walked with Elohiym” and was “perfect” in his generation. Noach is also “Son of Elohiym” because he did not practice sin. The “Sons of Elohiym” occupied the Land of Eden. They were living in the Presence of Yahuah just like the House of Yashar’El was before they were cast-out. The Law tells us that it is a prohibition for the “Sons of Elohiym” or the “House of Yashar’El” to intermarry with the surrounding nations.

Take heed to yourself, lest you make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land where you go, lest it be for a snare in the midst of you: But you shall destroy their altars, break their images, and cut down their groves: For you shall worship no other mighty one: for Yahuah, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous Elohiym: Lest you make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, and they go a whoring after their mighty ones, and do sacrifice unto their mighty ones, and one call you, and you eat of his sacrifice; And you take of their daughters unto your sons, and their daughters go a whoring after their mighty ones, and make your sons go a whoring after their mighty ones.

Shemoth/Exodus 34:12-16

This Law tells us that if the “Sons of Elohiym” marry daughters from the nations that they will be led astray to worship other mighty ones. Based on this evidence, it appears that the offspring of Adam and Chavah who still lived in the Land of Eden chose to marry women from the Land of Nod where Qayin dwelt. This interaction led the “Sons of Elohiym” astray from the Ways of our Father. Shaul of Tarsus confirms this understanding and also tells us not to be unequally yoked with unbelievers.

Be not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship has righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion has light with darkness? And what concord has Messiah with Belial? or what part has he that believes with an infidel? And what agreement has the Temple of Elohiym with idols? for you are the Temple of the living Elohiym; as Elohiym has said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their Elohiym, and they shall be my people.

2 Corinthians 6:14-16

The Temple of Yahuah exists in His Presence. This means that those who are considered the “Temple of Yahuah” do not practice sin. They are righteous and walk in the light. They obey ALL of the Laws of Yahuah including Shemoth 34:12-16. This Law tells us that if we marry unbelievers that they will cause us to be led astray which led to the Flood event in the time of Noach.

This same situation occurred when the Midianite women seduced the “Sons of Elohiym”. They caused the “Sons of Elohiym” to be led astray. Here is an excerpt regarding this event.

And Yahuah spoke unto Moshe, saying, Vex the Midianites, and smite them: For they vex you with their wiles, wherewith they have beguiled you in the matter of Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of a prince of Midian, their sister, which was slain in the day of the plague for Peor’s sake.

Bemidbar/Numbers 25:16-18

This situation caused men in the House of Yashar’El to sin against Yahuah and “fall”. As a result, many of them died which is the same outcome noted in the flood event. Our Father destroyed all of the inhabitants of the earth except Noach and his family because they sinned. They broke His Laws which were subsequently written down in great detail later by the Prophet Moshe. Apparently, they had gone past a point of no return in which our Father saw no other remedy than to destroy them. We do see that Yahuah would spare a city for the sakes of ten righteous people in the following discussion with Abraham:

And he said, Oh let not Adonai be angry, and I will speak yet but this once: Peradventure ten shall be found there. And he said, I will not destroy it for ten’s sake.

Bereshith/Genesis 18:32

There were only eight on the Ark so perhaps the threshold is ten righteous people. If there are ten righteous people based on His definition of “righteousness” then He will not utterly destroy a place. However, Yahusha made a sobering remark in the following testimony:

I tell you that he will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of man comes, shall he find faith on the earth?

Luke 18:8

How many people actually hear and obey ALL of the Laws of Yahuah written by the Prophet Moshe on the earth? Most people are in a stage of transition from the ways of the world to the Ways of our Father, but have not completed the transformation process. Is this sufficient to stop our Father from destroying the inhabitants of the earth a second time? They are not “tamiym” or “perfect” like Noach. They have not completed their growth.

Perhaps the decision is dependent upon the heart attitude of these people. Do they view their transition process lackadaisically and not with a fervent desire to adopt the Ways of our Father? Do the cares of this world squash the remaining energy that is left in a day to read and study His Word? Does it matter if reading and studying His Word is a lower priority than watching a television program or playing a video game? Perhaps our priorities reveal a lot more about our hearts than we realize.

The truth is that destruction is coming. Yahuah is going to avenge His elect once again and it will be a very dark day. The reason He will destroy the inhabitants of the earth is because people have departed from His Laws and trample upon them. They are defined as “nephilim” in His eyes. They are “fallen ones”. Based on His definition, the earth is overflowing with “nephilim” because this word does not refer to “giants”. It refers to those who sin against Him. Based on this definition, we are most certainly living in days like Noach.

But as the days of Noach were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noach entered into the ark, And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

Mattithyahu/Matthew 24:37-39

People are not expecting destruction because they do not realize the reasons why our Father destroyed the earth in the Flood event. If they did, they would be repenting from their sins right now and making it a very high priority. It will most definitely take them by surprise.
